Q. What is included in a VPS hosting plan ?

:- The only programs that come pre-installed and set up on each of our VPS hosting plans are:

* The Operating System
* Anything included with a basic install of that Operating System
* The webserver for that Operating System (e.g. Apache on Linux, IIS on Windows)

If you opt for cPanel/Plesk control panel with your VPS, then the installation will include PHP and MySQL but any non-control panel VPS will not include any extra applications such as PHP and MySQL. All of these can be installed by you and configured as they need them. They are both available free of charge from their vendors.

What can I install on my VPS?

A VPS is similar to a dedicated server in terms of features and access level it offers. This means you can install pretty much any applications or add-ons that you need, and set them up exactly as per your requirements. You will have full administrative/root SSH access to the VPS which would allow you the flexibility to do so. The only restrictions which You would need to bear in mind are the physical limitations such as disk space, RAM, CPU allocated to your VPS.

Q. Can you give me some advice on what to choose, VPS Hosting or Semi Dedicated Hosting

Ans. Whether to choose VPS Hosting or Semi Dedicated Hosting depends upon what are you planning to host/run on the server. Q. Which can be used as good game server, is it VPS or a Dedicated Server?

We do not recommend using a VPS as a game server since memory and CPU allocations for a VPS are far lesser in comparison to a physical dedicated server. We generally do not recommend a VPS to be used as a Game Server as most of the games are big on resources, which will dramatically slow down the server, which in turn would not be worth the money you would save.

Q. What does Root Access to the server mean ?

Ans. Root Access is an administrator level log-on for Dedicated Servers, Cloud Servers, eNlight Cloud VMs & VPS Hosting. Having root access to the server gives you the ability to take full control of your server. You can then use it for almost anything you wish to including hosting multiple websites, third party software/applications, game servers etc. You can also maintain it as per your preferences.

Please note that not all eUKhost Hosting Services come with full root access. We provide full root access to clients only on VPS Hosting, Cloud Servers, eNlight Cloud and Dedicated Servers.

Even if a client opts for a fully managed server, he/she will be given full administrator rights to his server to have total control of the server and the content hosted on it.

How to use Root Access:

* Linux-based Servers: You have to establish an SSH connection to your server using “root” as a username, the root password, and the IP address assigned to your VPS/Cloud/Dedicated Server. These login details will be forwarded to you in the Welcome Email after your server is setup. You can use any SSH Client Software (Putty, Secure CRT, etc.) to establish the connection.

* Windows-based Servers: You have to establish a remote desktop connection using “Administrator” as a username, the administrative password, and the IP address assigned to your VPS/Cloud/Dedicated Server. These login details will be forwarded to you in the Welcome Email after your server is setup. You can use the Remote Desktop Connection manager provided by Microsoft.

Q. Linux Semi-Dedicated hosting or Windows Semi-Dedicated Hosting? I have no idea can anybody help or explain in simple terms, what the advantages and disadvantages of each are?

Ans. If you don’t know which platform you need, then most likely you do not require Windows hosting and you should select one of our Linux web hosting plans. Your choice of web server platforms should be influenced by the use to which you intend to put it. The majority of web features including PHP, MySQL, POP3 etc run fine on both Windows server as well as Linux server platforms.

If you intend to develop your site using ASP, FrontPage, ASP.NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MS SQL Server, or any of the other Microsoft’s owned technologies then you should opt for Windows Semi-Dedicated hosting.

You would need to use Windows hosting is when you are using the specific NT applications. Microsoft FrontPage may be used on both the Linux and Windows platforms as since most hosting companies support the Microsoft FrontPage server extensions on both.

Q. Are the SSH access enabled servers in UK/Europe?

Ans :- SSH access is allowed on few of our UK based shared hosting servers. We have a couple of shared servers in UK reserved for clients who need SSH access in shared hosting environment. Jailed Shell access is available on these servers specifically reserved for SSH Hosting. If you need full root access then You should consider our VPS Hosting, Cloud hosting or Dedicated Server as VPS, Cloud server and Dedicated Servers allow full root access along with complete control and flexibility to install and run applications of choice.

Linux geeks always demand SSH access as it helps them to perform many complicated tasks in couple of seconds. Changing permission and ownership of files, replacing specific words in multiple files, moving multiple files and folders in different directories, downloading data from remote servers and restoring data becomes very simple if you have SSH access enabled on the server. SSH Hosting has some disadvantages as well in shared web hosting environment as any wrong commands fired by customers can create problem for whole shared server. Jailed shell access enforces restrictions on customers, but jailed shell SSH access helps you with all basic needs which need to be performed with SSH Access.

There are no such restrictions enforced on VPS, Cloud Server and Dedicated server customers, but those with incomplete knowledge of Linux commands should consider cPanel / WHM control panel for most of their needs. Always follow a simple policy of avoiding use of ” / ” in your commands. Most of the times you end up chowning or deleting files and folders from the base of your server if you fire a wrong command. Deleting files and folders from / of your server or vps will end up in removal of some important libraries which will leave only one option ahead of you and that would be OS reload. :)
